The wimmerting cherry
Around the middle of the last century, many meadows in our community still had numerous cherry trees of the “prunus avium” or bigarreau. In recent years, however, one observes that fewer “Jommerteingse” are hanging from the branches from along the way. The bigarreau of Wimmertingen was traded at the auctions of Borgloon and Sint-Truiden. It was a rather expensive cherry whose price fluctuated between 7 to 10 Belgian francs per kilogram. The color of the pluckable fruit ranges from yellow-red to chestnut brown. The heart-shaped dorsal seam is red. The shiny tense fruit skin gives a crackling sensation when eaten. The flesh is attached to the kernel. Is this homegrown product doomed to disappear? Perhaps its decline in recent years is due to its susceptibility to cracking. A hefty rainfall is enough to make the ripe cherry pop open. One can probably imagine the disappointment and discouragement of cherry growers when they saw their efforts of an entire year destroyed in one fell swoop by a whim of nature.
The vernacular claims that the first cherry tree in our village would have stood near the house on the corner of smet street, let that be just Vous lé Vous 🙂
The droppings of a pigeon, which had flown over from elsewhere, would have contained a seed from which the first tree would have grown.
